DESCRIPTION:On April 8\, 2024\, North America will experience its second total solar eclipse in 7 years and\, yes\, the path of totality will be moving right through Ohio. After that\, it won’t be until 2044 that such an event will visit the lower 48 states again. If you are the right location at the right time\, you will experience over 4 minutes of totality (darkness). In this program\, you will come to better understand how a solar eclipse works and how to optimize your chances to view this event when the time comes. We will explore the path of totality as it moves across the United States and Ohio\, weather trends that may impact viewing\, safety\, observing tools\, and various ways to improve your chances to view the event. DESCRIPTION:Take a 3-mile guided off-trail hike at the wetland to explore this part of the park that is usually closed to visitors. Please bring binoculars if you own them. Trail conditions are crushed gravel and unimproved with moderate hills. Expect off-trail conditions to include mud\, possible standing water (puddle-like) and uneven conditions in the wetland. Off-trail conditions near a wetland are unpredictable in the spring. Long pants\, hiking boots\, walking stick and tick repellant are encouraged. SUMMARY:Central Ohio Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:Last day of the two day family-friendly festival featuring multiple performing stages presenting an array of upbeat folk/roots/Americana music. \nActivities include drum circle\, kid programming\, music workshops\, a Festival Store\, Beer garden offering Nocterra craft beer. Food trucks on site. (Note: you are not permitted to bring your own alcohol onto Metro Park grounds). \nNEW this year are 4 ongoing jam tents\, each with a different style: folk-mix\, bluegrass\, old-time and a tent dedicated to serving the very beginner jammer.\nSunday opens with an 11 am “Songs of the Spirit” session with the audience participating with chants\, rounds\, and songs. \nNEW this year\, the “YouthFolk Tent” serving kids and youth with performances and workshops. Youth workshop offerings include making a drum out of wooden box frames. Plus\, an “instrument petting zoo” to let children handle folk instruments. Plus\, hands-on arts and crafts. Also\, festival mascot Darby Duck will be on hand for the young and young-at-heart. \nMore than 30 workshops on songwriting\, the history of folk music\, joining a jam group\, important musical figures\, and how to play guitar\, fiddle\, ukulele\, tin whistle\, and other instruments. Some workshops will be for beginning players\, and others will be for more advanced musicians. \nWhether scratching an itch to get outside and enjoy nature — at the same time listening to and/or playing music\, learning something new\, or just chilling in the awesome\, green outdoors\, you’ll find the cure for what ails you at the Central Ohio Folk Festival. \nNo fixed fees. Your generous $$ support makes all of this possible. Donation tents will be at entrance to the grounds. SUMMARY:Central Ohio Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:A two day family-friendly festival featuring multiple performing stages presenting an array of upbeat folk/roots/Americana music\, kids’ & youth programming\, and 30+ music workshops (all levels). \nSaturday\, May 6 – 10:30am-5:30pm Festival\nThe 7pm Saturday night headliner is New-York based progressive folk/Americana band\, Nefesh Mountain\, a band hailed as one of today’s leading bands in pushing the boundaries of American roots music. They have recorded and shared the stage with Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) and Mark Schatz (Nickel Creek) to name just a few. They have played to sold-out audiences from Chicago to New York City and many places in between. \nOther offerings include two drum circles (one each day); a Festival Store\, Beer garden offering Nocterra craft beer. Food trucks on site. (Note: you are not permitted to bring your own alcohol onto Metro Park grounds). \nNEW this year are 4 ongoing jam tents\, each with a different style: folk-mix\, bluegrass\, old-time and a tent dedicated to serving the very beginner jammer. \nMore than 30 workshops on songwriting\, the history of folk music\, joining a jam group\, important musical figures\, and how to play guitar\, fiddle\, ukulele\, tin whistle\, and other instruments. Some workshops will be for beginning players\, and others will be for more advanced musicians. \nWhether scratching an itch to get outside and enjoy nature — at the same time listening to and/or playing music\, learning something new\, or just chilling in the awesome\, green outdoors\, you’ll find the cure for what ails you at the Central Ohio Folk Festival. \nNo fixed fees. Your generous $$ support makes all of this possible. Donation tents will be at entrance to the grounds. SUMMARY:Plant A Tree at Highbanks
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day by helping plant native Ohio trees in an area of the forest where volunteers have been removing invasive plant species. We will be planting native trees to help the forest recover to a healthy ecosystem. Trees have been selected to help pollinators or birds. Trees have been donated by Green Columbus as part of their Earth Day celebration. Please bring a shovel\, work gloves and water bottle. We will be planting off-trail\, please be sure to treat your clothing with tick repellant.. Expect to be get dirty and wear shoes with good traction. Take home a free native Ohio tree after the program. Ages 6+. \nMeeting Location notes; Meet in the Big Meadows Picnic Area. After entering the park\, follow the park road all the way to back of the park and enter the Big Meadows Picnic Area. Meet us in the first parking lot on the RIGHT. Additional parking available in near by parking lots. “Program” signs will be posted in the park to help you find our meeting location.

Limited parking in the nature center parking lot on busy days. Additional parking available in the Oak Coves Picnic Area. The Oak Coves picnic area\, 10-min walk from the nature center. Follow the paved trail through Oak coves toward the nature center.
